Everything outside is gray and it’s very cold. A lot of people can’t afford food because the prices keep doubling and these people are losing their houses and are broke. Also her mom’s plant died because of the frost. Lady Seymour was getting better and Madam Lockton wasn’t too pleased about this. At Lady Seymour’s house Madam was talking about the British soldiers looted the City Hall library. They took books, ruined paintings, and broke equipment. Lady Seymour gave Isabel a heavy wool cloak. Isabel heard commotion on her way to the water pump. The British soldiers captured the American Soldiers. She watched the soldiers walk with their heads down when she saw a face she knew. The person she knew was Curzon. later that night the extra food at the Lockton house was thrown out. It was from a dinner to celebrate the capture of General Washington. Towards the end of dinner she snuck a bowl of soup to the backyard. Isabel went to the prison Curzon was being kept in. She brought him a bucket of rice pudding to eat. When she got inside there was a bunch of hungry men and boys. She saw Curzon lying on the floor with no blanket. They passed the bucket of food around the cell so everyone could have some. The men hadn’t eaten in three days. Before leaving the guard asked her if she would deliver a message to their captain so she did. Lady Seymour had a very bad fever. l Isabel was sent out to run all of her errands. One day she had to go to the bakery and then get ink and newspaper from the bookstore. She was looking at the books when the man at the front desk appeared holding out a book. He told her to take it but not let anyone know about it.
It was Christmas Eve morning and Isabel had already gone to the prison, pump, and tavern. She was cutting holly berries and twigs for Madam for her holiday decorations. Isabel had Christmas off and decided to spend it strolling in New York. Lady Seymour got Isabel a new pair of leather shoes and Madam Lockton got her nothing. Later Madam Lockton confronted Isabel about visiting the prison to give table scraps to the enemy. She forbids her to go to the prison because it could make her and Mr. Lockton look like they are rebels. The New York City war was on the brink. Madam sent Isabel out to get groceries in the middle of a battle, for she was too scared to do it herself and Becky didn't want to either. During the trip, she ducked into an abandoned store with broken windows to spy on a group of soldier slaves. She did not see a red hat. The next day, the Loyalists drove the Patriots out of another city. Isabel dared to sneak out of the Lockton house, but was too scared. She was bound to get caught. Isabel had caught a case of Camp fever. The fire had devastated the city, and everyone in it. The Lockton household was one of the few buildings standing, so they were forced to house some others that weren't as fortunate. Isabel slept with 5 soldiers and their wives in the basement. Let's just say that it wasn't the most comfortable place in the world. Upstairs were 3 more, so there was much work to be done. Luckily the wives had had much experience working, so she had some help.
It may seem like not much happened in this chapter, but there are much more details when you read the book. Isabel awaits Christmas to see what good fortune the Lord has given her. Isabel was awoken by being dragged to jail. They had beat her. After 2 dreadful nights filled with rats and bald women, she was taken to court. Isabel was tried with her crimes of running away and was to be branded on her right cheek with the letter "I" for insolence. The branding took place shortly after the trial, they put her in the stocks, and streaked a comet across her face. They burned her skin and seared her soul. Isabel would never be the same again. She woke after 6 days in the attic room of Lady Seymour's house. After Isabel had bathed and eaten, it was back to Madam's house "where she belonged." On the last night she stayed at Lady Seymour's, there was a fire. Isabel woke with a start to all the smoke. She crawled to Lady Seymour's room and picked her up slowly. She dragged her lifeless-like seeming body and dragged her out the door. Isabel watched intensely at the flames swallowing the house whole. Lady Seymour slowly awakened and wanted Isabel to get the chest. Isabel bounded up the front steps into the burning building. She ran up the stairs two by two to Lady Seymour's bedchamber. The chest was too heavy to hold, so she grabbed the letters and leaped back down the stairs. She pushed out of the final door and collapsed in a heap on the concrete. Madam Lockton brought them in and let Isabel take care of Lady Seymour while she was recovering. When she finally recovered mostly, Madam held a party for Colonel Reagan and some other officers. Isabel tirelessly walked up and down the stairs carrying trays of food. The next day the cannons blew constantly. There was a big battle in Brooklyn. Isabel was left to decide which side the Lord was on, and which side should she be on.
Chapter 6
We are told that the subjection of Americans may tend to the the Diminution of our own liberties;...How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of Negroes? -English Author Samuel Johnson in his political Pamphlet, Taxation No Tyranny Chapter 7 I hired a girl to clean[the house],it had a cart load of dirt in it...One of the chambers was used to keep Poultry in,an another sea coal, and another salt. You may conceive how it look'd. The house is so exceeding damp being shut up, that the floors mildewd, the ceiling falling down, and the paper mouldy and falling from the walls. -Letter from Abigail Adams to her Husband,John Chapter 8 ...We have in common with all other men a natural right to our freedoms without being depriv'D of them by our fellow men...we were unjustly dragged by the cruel hand of power from our dearest friends and sum of us stolen...and brought hither to be made by slaves for life in a Christian Land thus we are deprived of every thing that hath a tendency to make life even tolerable... -Petition for freedom from a group of slaves to Massachusetts Governor Thomas Gage, His Majesty's Council, and The House of Representatives, 25 May 1774 Chapter 9 ...Hundreds in this[New York]Colony are active against us and such in the weakness of the government,(if it can deserve the name)that the tories openly profess their sentiments in the favour of the enemy, and live unpunished. -Letter of William Tudor, Washington's chief legal officer, to John Adams Chapter 10 The people[of New York]- why the people are magnificent; in their carriages, which are numerous, in their house furniture, which is fine, in their pride and conceit, which are inimitable, in their profaneness, which is intolerable in the want, in the want of principle, which is prevalent, and in their Toryism, which is insufferable. -Letter from Patriot colonel Henery Knox to his wife, Lucy The news was Master Lockton and a few other men planned to kill General Washington. One afternoon the loyalists (Mater Lockton and his men) found out the rebels knew their plan to kill Washington. The rebels were capturing the men planning to kill Washington so their captain would still be there to guide them. Master Lockton had to secretly leave so he wouldn't be captured. Her promised Madam he would soon return when he was ready. Lockton left in a hidden box without getting caught, leaving unhappy / furious Madam Lockton with Aunt Seymour. Later that day, Isabel and Ruth attended watching a loyalist named, Hickey (who planned to kill Washington) be hung. After, they went to church. While attending church the British sailed into the harbor and started firing. The rebel and loyalists war had began. The next day Ruth and Isabel washed muddy rocks with tablecloths. Once again Ruth and Isabel displeased Madam. Everyday, Madam grew more annoyed with the sisters and more and more British ships arrived while rebellion grew. Later that day, Madam was being very kind to Ruth and Isabel serving them heavy sugary sweets. Ruth and Isabel were confused why but they still took it. The next morning Isabel woke up to find Ruth was gone, SOLD. The sugars made both sisters sleep heavily, so Isabel was sleeping when Madam took Ruth to sell. Isabel was RAGED. Isabel regretted taking the sweets, she regretted falling asleep, but mainly she regretted ever letting herself be relaxed that night. Madam threatened Isabel when Isabel released her anger at madam with words about how Isabel felt. Madam purposely chunked a heavy, thick painting at Isabel making Isabel visushly bleed and run straight to colonel Regan. Isabel started blabbing about what Madam Lockton had done to her and about how Colonel Regan promised her future freedom. Before Isabel was done explaining madam found Isabel and convinced Colonel Regan that Isabel was MADAM'S PROPERTY and she should take her back home. Isabel tried to run again. She almost made it. There were many inspirational sayings and quotes throughout these chapters and titles. I feel the best saying I read was in the middle of these chapters. This is what Isabel thinks about Madam controlling her. “She cannot chain my soul. Yes, she could hurt me. She'd already done so...I would bleed, or not. Scar, or not. Live, or not. But she could not hurt my soul, not unless I gave it to her.” Becky, Ruth, and Isabel continually work hard cleaning necessary and unnecessary rooms. Soon in the afternoon, Master Bellingham arrives to arrest Master Lockton. The Locktons try to convince Bellingham out of arresting Master Lockton, but they don't succeed. After the inconvenience, Isabel's is sent on a journey to fetch lady Seymour for Madam's company. Lady Seymour provides Isabel with a few little treats making Isabel fond of the Lady. Unexpectedly, one day Master Lockton arrives back. Isabel takes on the job of daily hiking to the water pump and assisting the Master when he has meetings. On Isabel's daily trip to the water pump, she met an old kind man and took in some news about the upcoming war. Madam continually weighs Isabel down with work and trays. While serving the master Isabel would gather useful information from listening to their conversations. One sunny day Ruth had one of her seizures and madam threatened to sell Ruth while Maddam beat Ruth on the head. Isabel and Master Lockton convinced Maddam out of selling Ruth. The lumps from madam would go away, but the threats would not. Isabel snuck out of the house and delivered news to the army (the news she picked up from eves dropping on Master Lockton and his men). She thought the news would help set her and Ruth free and she delivered it without getting caught. The news was something that could kill Master Lockton and his men when the army found out. Read more to see what happens next! The girls were bought by the Locktons and began there days with the Locktons on a boat. Isabel meets another black slave,Curzon, who is young like her. Curzon works for Master Bellingham, a rich white man. Master Bellingham's riches is even shown on his slaves. Proof of this is that Curzon wears a Bright Red hat that doesn't have a spec of dirt and a ring in his ear.Master Bellingham and the Locktons have a little bit of a rivalry amongst each other.
Once Isabel is leaving with Ruth close by her side and the Locktons, Madam Lockton demands clean water. The slave, Curzon, offers to lead the way to the Water Pump and back to the Lockton house for Isabel. Madam Lockton agreed as long as she got her water. Curzon went into a full on sprint to town. Isabel tried to keep up with Curzon but wasn't fast enough. Isabel tried to call Curzon's name and tell him to slow down but, he didn't listen. Isabel began to loose sight of his bright red hat and got a little worried. Finally, she saw Curzon at a stop. Isabel charged at Curzon with all of the strength that she had left and argued with him about abandoning her like that. Isabel soon realized that she should of kept her temper because, he might really abandon her now. She needed a way to the water pump and to the Lockton's house so, for Ruth's safety she apologized to Curzon. Curzon accepted her apology but,she earned the name Country somehow. They began to head to the Water Pump once again but this time they walked.Curzon tried to make a conversation, it seemed, by asking about the Locktons. He soon wanted Isabel to become a spy. One who would hear word about Bellingham or plans of the king from Master Lockton and, share the story with Curzon who would tell Colonel Regan.(Colonel Regan is the officer in charge who would help Isabel and Ruth get their freedom.)Isabel thought that the boy was crazy and declined being a spy. They finally arrived back at the Lockton house and, that is when Curzon left. Becky Berry gave a rude introduction to herself not knowing who Isabel was. Soon the confusion was resolved. Becky explained how things were going to operate in the Lockton house. One day Isabel was called to Parlor by Madam Lockton. Isabel met Master Lockton's Aunt,Lady Seymour. When Lady Seymour asked of her name Isabel answered with Isabel Finch. Madam Lockton was disgusted by Isabel's reply and demanded that she go by the name of Sal Lockton from now on.Isabel was minutes later busied with the task of being a waitress to Master Lockton and his guests.Master Lockton and his guest talked about a lot of different topics, mainly complaining though. One of the topics that caught Isabel's attention was about the king. When the men left Isabel knew what she had to do. What was it that she had to do? In order to know you will have to keep reading.
